MUS - House of Terror

Having survived two terror regimes - Nazi invasion and Communist dictatorships- it was felt that the time had come for Hungary to create a fitting memorial to the victims, and at the same time to present a picture of what life was like for Hungarians in those times.

Opened in 2002, the House of Terror Museum - the only one of its kind - is a monument to the memory of those held captive, tortured and killed in this building, Andrássy Boulevard 60, which was a center feared by all citizens. During the months of the reign of the Arrowcross, the cellar at became notorious throughout the city. Their victims, most of whom never left the building alive, were kept for shorter or longer periods in former coal cellars. Interrogations were held on the upper floors, where at the doorway of each room, a soldier stood with a rifle.

The Museum, while presenting the horrors in a tangible way, also intends to make people understand that the sacrifice for freedom was not in vain. Ultimately, the fight against the two cruellest systems of the 20th century ended with the victory of the forces of freedom and independence. Come and see for yourself, how things were in Budapest and Hungary, feel the desesperation and the fears of the time, learn about this dark past.
