MUS - Dohány Synagogue

One of the greatest monuments to the Jewish culture that once flourished in Budapest, this synagogue is a fascinating and beautiful mix of architectural styles and religious faith. As the largest synagogue in Europe and the second largest in the world, the Dohány Street Synagogue still today functions as a place of worship, a museum, and a memorial. During the II. World War, the Synagogue represented the borders of the ghetto of Budapest.

It is difficult to select one aspect as the most beautiful of the Synagogue, but the Memorial of the Hungarian Jewish Martyrs located in the rear courtyard stands out. In the form of a weeping willow, each leaf is inscribed with the names of Holocaust victims, and it is sure to cause you to pause and admire its beauty and significance.

Here, you will not only see, feel and learn of the jewish history in Hungary and Budapest, but you will also have the possibility to see how this place was able to be re-born from it's ashes, converting into a place of worship, teachings, survival and part of every day life.
