DESCRIPTION The building in Transylvanian style was completed in 1913. The rustic style with its timber framework reminds the visitor of the buildings in the Zoo.
In December, 1992 the owners of the Gundel Restaurant decided to revive the Owl's Castle and to bring back its old charm. The renewed restaurant was reopened in May, 1993.
The furnishings of the restaurant evoke a middle-class dining room of the early twentieth century. During summertime it is a delight to spend some time at one of the two shady garden-terraces at the perimeter of the Zoo.
The basic principle of the restaurant is the idea that the good tasted and delightful dishes which accompany our lives, are created mostly by women: by mothers, grandmothers and god-mothers. To evoke the atmosphere of a traditional restaurant of the past exclusively women are at work, they prepare and serve the fresh specialties of a "home cuisine”.
