Skanzen Museum

The aim of founding the Szentendre Open Air Museum was to present folk architecture, interior decoration, farming and way of life in the Hungarian language area from the 2nd half of the 18th century to the 1st half of the 20th, through authentic objects and original, relocated houses arranged in old settlement patters. It is a village that represents 9 regions of the country, the 300-odd buildings are situated in a unique natural environment, the Duna-Ipoly National Park, just 20km from the capital.

The more and more elaborate settlement plan appropriates the relocation of more than 400 edifices into the museum, arranged into village-like regional units on the basis of ethnographical considerations. The nine regional units are the Upper Tisza Region, A Highland Market Town, Northern Hungary, The Central Tisza Region, The Great Hungarian Plain, Southern Transdanubia, The Balaton Uplands, Western Transdanubia, and the Kisalföld.

The Museum at Skanzen contains a wide array of religious, educational and public institutions such as a fire station, tavern, shepherd's hut, stagecoach relay and so on. Private homes and outbuildings represent the typical home lives as they evolved over the centuries. Gravestones and posts collected in cemeteries, a Calvary, mills and other objects enhance the traditional village setting.

A fascinating part of Skanzen are the interiors. The furnishings, as well as doors, windows and heating devices 'dress' the house, giving a sense of the social, national and religious positions of the inhabitants, as well as giving a sense of what home life was like in days past.

Encounter the origins of Hungary, it's traditions and folk.
