St. Stephen Basilica

Budapest's largest church, the Saint Stephen's Basilica is a dominant sight of downtown Pest. The domes are visible from nearly everywhere in the city and the plaza housing the basilica is frequently crossed by pedestrians.

Built between 1851 and 1905, Saint Stephen's is not only beautiful, but is furthermore the site of many important events. It is also home to the Hungarians' most revered relic- the mummified right hand of the first monarch, King Saint Stephen - making it more than just another beautiful church to visit. One can view the hand and then ride the elevator to the 65 meter high lookout at the top of the grand dome for a 360-degree view of the city. The Basilica is open for mass as well, apart from the guided tours, where you do not only see the most important statues and relics, but you are also told about their history and reason to be there.

This basilica is both a lovely sight and a monument to a critical historical Hungarian figure, making it rather significant on more than one front, as indicated by its enormous size. Visit this amazing place, feel it's aura of greatness and let yourself be taken on a hystorical journey of splendour.
