The uniques caves were created in the Castle Hill by hot water springs millions of years ago, and they served as hunting ground for the prehistoric man known as "Hunter of Buda" approximately 500 thousand years ago. With the growth of civilisation, these caves were connected to each other and were used for several purposes during the history. First they were only cellars for the houses built in this area, later the had economic and military purposes. In the 1930's, The complex cellar that for that time had become a labyrinth, was converted into a shelter to accomodate more than ten thousand people, while in the Cold War, the installation was a secret military base.

Nowadays, the the Labyrinth of Buda Castle has touristical purposes. It is situated in a depth of several storeys, under Buda Castle District, which is part of the World Heritage. This 1200-meter-long complex of caves and cellars welcomes its visitors with historic walls and mysterious exhibitions.

The Labyrinth can be separated into several areas, like the Prehistorical Labyrinth, which has authentic copies of the most celebrated cave paintings of Europe, or the Labyrinth of Another World, which shows the fate of our civilisation reflected in fossils of 40 million years. The Historical Labyrinth is a "millennial wandering" in the entrails of the Hill, among symbolic figures and scenes of Hungarian and World History. The Labyrinth of Courage are for the visitors who are not afraid of anything. For them, this is a trial within the darkness of the caves.

A visit here is marvelous, amazing, misterious, a littly spooky but unique in all sense. Both the expositions and the location is one-and-only, something that you can only find here is Budapest, a city with history, great places and a little "spark".
