Jewish Heritage

We created our programme, called Jewish Cultural Heritage in Budapest, considering that the biggest Jewish population in Eastern-Europe lived always in Budapest. With this programme we would like to help you to get acquainted with this heritage.

Not only do you visit the Synagogue and the Jewish Museum during our 2-2,5 hour long guided programme, but it also gets you to know how the Dohány street Synagogue managed surviving the years of the World War II. The tour includes visiting the Memorial Cemetery and the Tree of Life in the Raul Wallenberg Memorial Park as well. The recently restored Jewish Museum and the world's second largest synagogue serve as locales for this programme.

The first worship in the Dohány street Synagogue took place in 1859. The Jewish Museum was built on the site of the house in which Theodor Herzl, the famous politician and novelist, was born. The museum, which was built next to the synagogue and cultural centre, was opened in 1932. The architectural style harmonises with the Moorish appearance of the synagogue. After the Second World War both buildings had to be rebuilt. The art treasures were returned undamaged from the National Museum.

At the end of the tour you can also have a taste of some Central-European traditional Jewish food (non kosher).

The programme is available every day during the week except for Saturday. Programmes start at 10.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. and, only on Sundays, at 11.30 a.m. Meeting at the main entrance of the Dohány street Synagogue.
