Eger

Eger is one of the most beautiful Baroque cities in Hungary. The centuries-old architectural heritage, the ecclesiastical treasures, the wine culture, the thermal baths and numerous cultural events combine to make Eger the most significant tourist centre in Northern Hungary.
The "Valley of the Beautiful Women" with several hundred-year-old cellars and belonging to Eger, is part of the historic wine-region. Eger is famous for production of red "Egri Bikavér" (Bull's Blood of Eger) and of white "Egri Leányka" (Maiden of Eger). Before a typical lunch there is possibility for a good winetasting!

In Eger was built the second largest church in Hungary, the classicist Cathedral. There are many ecclesiastical buildings and palaces in Baroque and Rococo styles. In Turkish times the medieval castle has become a symbol of patriotism. Captain Dobó heroically defended the fortified castle against the vastly outnumbering Turkish army in 1552.

Not far from the town there is a little village Szilvásvárad. The village is located in the beauty of nature, and famous of its horse farm and trout farm.

On the way back to Budapest it is also possible to visit village Hollókő, the part of the World Heritage programme. Today's face of the village dates from the rebuilding which took place after the 1909 fire, though the village retained its original layout and many houses still preserve original vernacular details. Guests are welcomed with homemade cake and warm hospitality. You can find souvenir shops and exhibitions.
