VIE - Lipizzaner Museum

The Lipizzaner Museum, which has been located in the former Imperial Court Pharmacy-a protected historic landmark-since 1997, presents the eventful history of the Lipizzaner horses from their origins in Lipizza up to the present day.

The museum, which is a joint undertaking of the Imperial Spanish Riding School and Kunsthistorisches Museum, offers a comprehensive and fascinating survey covering over four hundred years from the sixteenth century to the present using paintings, engravings, drawings, photographs, uniforms, harnesses, as well as video and film presentations. Visitors to the museum learn about the establishment of the Imperial Spanish Riding School, the early days of Lipizzaner breeding, and the special traits of this, the world's oldest breed, as well as about the haute école or classic school of equestrianism. The museum provides an insight into why the Imperial Spanish Riding School-a total Baroque work of art uniting man, animal and architecture-is so unique.

A highlight of the exhibit is the unique view of the stables, via two large monitors, which enable visitors to experience the Lipizzaners live in their daily routine.
