DAY 1: SALZBURG - CHIEMSEE
Arrival to Salzburg, time for free, lunch by own. Visit the Salzburg Christmas Fair by own, shopping.

Salzburg is proud of its past. As an ecclesiastical principality which enjoyed the exclusive status of beeing responsible to the Emperor directly, Salzburg was ruled by archbishops, uniting both secular and ecclesiastical power. The modern city is located on the site of Roman Juvavum, a settlement which grew up on one of the major military roads of the ancient world. After the collapse of Rome, centuries passed until, in 696, Bishop Rupert founded the city anew. The face of the contemporary Salzburg, dominated by the baroque majesty of the old city, was created in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was then that the Prince-archbishops Wolf Dietrich, Markus Sittikus and Paris Lodron realized their major building programmes, thereby leaving an indelible mark on the architecture of the city.Even today, over one hundred churches, castles and palaces bear witness to the power of the Salzburg archbishops. In 1756 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Salzburg's greatest son, was born here.

MARKTL AM INN
Marktl am Inn (Little Market on the Inn River), or simply Marktl, is a village and historic market municipality in the state of Bavaria, Germany, near the Austrian border, in the Altötting district of Upper Bavaria. The most notable neighbouring town is Altötting. The town has approximately 2,700 inhabitants.
Marktl is the birthplace of the current Pope Benedict XVI (formerly Cardinal Joseph Alois Ratzinger), who succeeded Pope John Paul II as the 265th head of the Roman Catholic Church.

ALTÖTTING
This small town is famous for the Gnadenkapelle (Chapel of the Miraculous Image), of one of the most visited shrines in Germany. This is a tiny octagonal chapel which keeps a venerated statue of the Virgin Mary. According to the legend, in 1489, a 3-year-old local child who had drowned in the river was revived when her grieven mother placed her in front of a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary at the high altar. News of the miracle quickly spread, and the chapel was immediately extended by the erection of a nave and a covered walkway. Other architectural highlights in the town are the twin-towered Stiftskirche, a late Gothic church erected in the early years of the 16th century in order to cater for the growing affluence of pilgrims, and the huge Neo-baroque Basilika, built at the beginning of the 20th century.
